We went to historic Rillito Park to watch the opening of the horse racing season here. Rillito Park was the first regulated quarter horse facility in the Untied States. There were a lot of other important contributions to horse racing, but honestly, since we are not experts, we did not recognize what a lot of them are. One thing we did recognize was the photo finish – it was developed here. A high-speed clock was placed at the finish line, and the finish was filmed with a movie camera. Frame-by-frame examination of the photographs, which showed the horses and the time, enabled precise timing. Who knew that so much horse racing history was made in the desert? Although its “hey day” ended in the fifties, it is working on making a comeback.
