April 25th, 2013 – Ottobeuren Abbey – Bavaria, Germany

We have just returned from  three weeks in Germany visiting Don’s family and doing some sight-seeing. We had very limited access to the internet, so this will be the first of many posts of what we did while we were there.  Our first trip was to one of the many monasteries in Bavaria, Ottobeuren Abbey, which was founded in 764.  The buildings that exist today were built in 1834 (fire destroyed the abbey twice and the Thirty Years War took its toll).   There are currently 19 monks, ranging in age from 32 to 78 (yes Don asked one of the monks this), and it is responsible for the Parish of Ottobeuren, a school, and an industrial school for poor boys.
