May 3, 2013 – Donauworth – Bavaria, Germany

On the second day on the Romantic Road, we went north from Augsburg to Donauwörth.  It is located where the Danube and Wornitz rivers meet and received its charter rights in 1193.  It is known for the Reichsstrasse which is among South Germany’s most beautiful streets (pictures 1, 3 and 4).  It is hard to tell from the pictures, but the street is on a hill like those in San Francisco.  It is very colorful and had lots of stores, including a Lego store (which of course Leslie had to pose with a Lego figure).   The second picture shows a portion of the fortress walls that surrounded the city in medieval times.

The last picture shows Harburg Castle which is north of Donauworth on the Romantic Road and is one of the best persevered castles in Germany.  It has never been conquered since it was built in the 1100s.  After World War II, Don’s father would take busloads of kids from Augsburg to go to a festival that was held in the castle.

I love this! How interesting…. especially interesting that your father took the busloads of children to the festival there. I would have LOVED taking my Salvation Army Girl Guards there!!
