May 11, 2013 – Mainau and Meersburg – Baden-Wuertemburg, Germany

Mainau is an island in Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) and is maintained as a garden island and a model of excellent environmental  practices.  We went there with Max (Don’s cousins’ husband) and his children Franziska (and her boyfriend Marion) and Leopold (that is Max and Leopold in the last picture).  Since it was spring, there were a lot of beautiful flowers blooming.  Don had a blast taking pictures (he took over 300).

In order to get to Mainau Island, we took a ferry from Meersburg.  It is a very well-preserved medieval city.  After we got back from Mainau, we walked around the city to do a bit of shopping and to see the beautiful buildings.

We ended the day at the Anhausen Zelt (an excuse to have a mini Octoberfest in the spring).  It was very neat to see the whole town out celebrating on a Saturday night.  The band that was playing was very good.  They played American and Bayern Country and Western music.  Don and I were able to sing along with a lot of the songs and it was interesting how the singer’s German accent went away when he sang the American songs.  Doris (Max’s wife) was able to join us for the festivities, so we wanted to put in a picture of her.  Since there was a lot of beer drinking going on, we will not post any other pictures from this event.
