We went to the Islands in the Sky part of Canyonlands National Park. The Colorado and Green rivers combine within the park, dividing it into four distinct districts. The Island in the Sky district is a broad and level mesa to the north of the park between the two rivers. We did not have time to go to the other three districts. We will have to do that on another trip.
The first picture shows Table Mesa which is located on the edge of the canyon and offers a cool view of the canyon and the La Sal mountains through the opening. The third and fourth pictures show how the Green River has carved the canyon.
The last two pictures are actually of Dead Horse Point State Park which is located in the same area. It actually looks a lot like the Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. It is very beautiful and much smaller so you can take it all in easier. Leslie is not very happy with the legend or the name that is associated with this place though. Animal lovers do not read further. The legend said that the peninsula (look in the middle of the picture) was once used as a corral for wild mustangs. The cowboys would round them up and herd them onto the point, choose the ones they wanted, and leave the rest there to die (they blocked the neck of the peninsula with branches and brush.)
