Another beautiful sunrise in the Sea of Cortez. Today we had to get off the boat and take a 2 hour van ride across the peninsula to Bahia Magdalena to see the gray whales and their calves. It was awesome!! Gray whales migrate the furthest than any other whale (over 6,000 miles from northern Alaska to Baja California) to have their babies. We went out in little pangas which are similar to our fishing boats. You can see in some of the pictures that the boats are quite small as compared to the whales. That is a mother in the pictures, not a baby. They are very gentle and the babies seem to be quite curious about the boats.
We saw several pairs of whales in the two hours we were out there. The guide was in the back with us and he and Leslie played musical chairs so Don could be on the correct side of the boat to get the pictures. Eventually Don moved to “seats” on either side of the motor and unbeknownst to him, the driver had to jump from side to side every time he moved to keep the boat level. He did not seem to mind (clearly Don was not the first to do this). It was an incredible experience to be so close to these animals
