May 2nd, 2015 – San Gimignano – Italy

This afternoon we were in San Gimignano which is a small walled medieval hill town.  We got to enjoy the beautiful views of the Tuscany countryside while we were driving (first 2 pictures).  Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form “an unforgettable skyline”. Within the walls, the well-preserved buildings include notable examples of both Romanesque and Gothic architecture.  It is absolutely amazing to see towns that were built right around the time America was discovered that are still standing and so well preserved.  (Many of the guides on this trip have reminded us that our country was not even discovered when many of the things we were looking at were created or built).
