July 18th, 2015 – Wrangell-St. Elias National Park (Root Glacier) – Alaska

We took a hike on a glacier today.  The toe of the Root Glacier (background of the 1st picture) is about 2 miles from Kennicott.  Once we got to the glacier, we put crampons on (last picture) and then walked on the glacier about an hour to a spot to have lunch (6th picture).  Luckily the guide was carrying mats because it would not have been nice to sit on the ice.   On the way back, we saw some ice climbers climbing out of a hole  (next to the last picture).  We had beautiful weather and it was really cool to see what a glacier is like up close and personal.

THIS HAD to be VERY exciting! It seems so strange to see you there in ice etc. and all bundled up when it is so hot here that you almost don’t dare go out the door for fear of not being able to breathe. I think it was about 98% here today.
