After being stuck in traffic for so long we decided to stay in Portage Valley for the day. There are several beautiful glaciers in this valley, as well as a stream where salmon return to spawn. The fourth picture shows trees that have actually petrified from salt water. They are all over this area. A 9.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 1964 caused the ground to sink 6 feet and salt water was infused into the trees’ root systems. Larry and Sharon are on their way north and we are on our way south, so we got together for a couple of days. We rode the tram at the Alyeska ski resort on a beautiful sunny day (pictures 5 – 11). The view was breathtaking. We walked up a very steep trail to get an even better view of the glaciers. We also stopped by a place where they were having a chain saw wood carving contest. The 14th picture is the one that won. It was incredible. The other side had a wolf and the other half of the fish and the mountain lion. The other three that are there are ones that were part of the gallery.
