June 2nd & 3rd, 2016 – Detroit, Michigan

Well, Leslie would not have believed it, but not only did we go to the University of Michigan, but Don bought a shirt.  We went to the football stadium which Don called “The house that the Buckeyes own”.  While in Ann Arbor, we went to Zingerman’s Delicatessen which is the number 1 deli in Michigan.  We had a reuben which we dubbed the 3rd best reuben we have had in our travels (behind New York and Las Vegas).

The next day we went to Detroit to try Michigan’s number 1 hotdog at Lafayette Coney Island.  Well, there must not be much competition in Michigan for hotdogs.  It was so-so, and did not even compare to Skins hot dogs in Greenville, SC or a Sonoran Dog from Tucson.  For dessert we went to Taste Love Cupcakes, which was a 2012 Food Network Cupcake Wars winner.  Leslie dubbed it the 3rd best cupcake and Don was very impressed with the cake part of the cupcake.  He actually ate a half of one which is big for him.

As a finale to the foodie part of our trip we went to Dutch Girl’s Donuts  (Michigan’s 5th best).  Sadly, the donut had much potential, but it was just so so.  Our plans had been to go to Bell Isle, an island in the middle of the Detroit River, but it was closed for a Grand Prix race.  We had to kill time before the baseball game, so we went MGM Grand Casino.  After initial losses, Leslie was able to recoup all that she lost at this casino and the Delaware casino, so she is a few dollars ahead for her gambling.

While Leslie gambled, Don did one of his favorite activities – taking pictures of architecture.  Detroit is working very hard to redo its downtown.  Michelin is doing some serious advertising on the people mover.  We went to a watch the Tigers play the White Sox.  The stadium is right next door to the Lions Stadium and very close to where they are building a new Pistons arena.  We like it when they put all of the sports venues together so they can make good use of the parking facilities and restaurants.  Leslie went nuts over all the tiger stuff in the Detroit stadium.  She also was very happy when their catcher, who is batting .150 for the season hit a home run.  The Tigers won, so we are continuing our streak of bringing luck to the home team.
