July 4th, 2016 – Enchanted Highway – North Dakota

We took a scenic detour as we moved from North Dakota to Wyoming.  The Enchanted Highway is a 32 mile stretch of road that has 7 metal sculptures on it.  The first one – Geese in Flight – is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest metal sculpture in the world.  The sculptures are the work of Gary Greff.   Thirty miles south of the nearest major highway, the town of Regent was dying, and he decided someone had to do something about it. A metal sculptor and retired school teacher, Gary started the work in 1990. His master plan is to create ten giant sculptures, one every few miles along Regency-Gladstone Road.

The 5th picture is of Leslie and Merlin making it through a metal maze that is next to the second sculpture.  Harder than it looks, especially when Merlin could go under the barriers that Leslie could not go through.
