July 9th, 2016 – Custer State Park – Custer, South Dakota

After “caving it”, we went for a drive in Custer State Park to look for wildlife.  It was a perfect day to be a car tourist as it was quite hot outside.  The park is home to a famous herd of 1,500 free roaming bison.  We did not see all 1,500 of them, but we did find some bachelors in a meadow and then the moms and the babies up on a hill.  The babies were either laying down or hiding behind their mom, so we did not get a great picture, but we enjoyed watching them in person.

We also got to see several pronghorn antelopes.  The park also has some wild burros (the park used to have rides and when they stopped, they turned the burros loose).  They evidently have been fed from cars, because they came right up to our car expecting to get something. We had to be quick on the draw to get the window up before they stuck their head in.
